Organic Materials and Synthetic Biomaterials

Properties and categories of materials
Properties of materials, categories of materials used in Medicine.
History of biomaterials
History of biomaterials.
Examples in the body
Examples of biomaterials in organs and systems of the body.
Biological response
The role of protein adsorption in the biological response, Cells, tissues, extracellular matrix, Cell-biomaterial interactions. Host reactions in biomaterials and their evaluation: inflammation, infection, treatment, immunization, hypersensitivity, toxicity, tumorigenesis, blood clotting.
Biocompatibility
Biological control of biomaterials: in vivo and in vitro compatibility.
Degradation
Degradation of materials in biological environment.
Applications in orthopaedics and dentistry
Applications of biomaterials in orthopedics, hip and knee prosthetics. Dental implantation. Surgical suture threads. Implant failure.
Ethical issues
Ethical issues for the development of new biomaterials.
Prospects
Prospects and possibilities in Biomaterials Science.

Learning Outcomes

The course gives a broad overview of the field of organic and synthetic biomaterials, presenting examples of biomaterial applications in medicine but also ethical issues that arise for the development of new biomaterials.
